An Unexpected Beginning
Founded in Boston in 2022, Sebastian Leather is a handcrafted leather goods brand rooted in design, individuality, and enduring quality.
The story began rather unexpectedly. Founder and Creative Director Sebastian La Chance was searching for a leather case to accommodate a particular high-end cigar for a client at the shop he was managing at the time. When he discovered that what he needed didn't exist, he purchased the raw materials, designed the case, and made it himself.
The original idea for Sebastian Leather was simple and utilitarian: handcraft fine cigar cases and other useful men's leather accessories.
Then someone asked Sebastian if he could make a woman's evening bag.
That question changed everything.
From Leatherwork to Handbag Design
The answer became the Elizabeth, Sebastian Leather's first original handbag design and the start of an entirely new direction for the brand.
What began as a practical exercise in leatherwork developed into a passion for handbag design and a desire to explore what could be created with leather beyond the men's accessories on which Sebastian Leather was founded.
Today, each collection is designed by Sebastian and handcrafted in Boston. The work is characterised by timeless silhouettes, thoughtful construction, and the distinctive gold Sebastian "S."
The nature of handmade work is intentionally present in every piece. Leather has its own grain and character, and the handcrafting process introduces subtle variations from one piece to the next. Rather than seeking the absolute uniformity of mass production, Sebastian Leather embraces those differences as part of what makes each piece individual.'
More Than the Piece
Personal connections have also found their way into Sebastian's designs.
The Jen was created in memory of Jennifer, the mother of a close friend, who died of breast cancer in 2022. Sebastian spent more than a year developing the design before presenting it to Jennifer's family.
Her favourite colour was green, inspiring Jen's emerald-green lining and creating a quiet, personal connection between the finished piece and the woman whose name it carries.
In Jennifer's memory, 10% of every Jen sold is donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation, allowing her story to continue through a piece created to honour her.
